Chapter Eight

Damien tried to ignore the tingling feeling in his hand as he held onto Nikolai’s arm. The surge of energy was distracting—enough so that he almost walked past the stairs leading to the dungeon. Damien unlocked one of the cells then nudged Nikolai inside. The Drágun quickly turned around and stared at him, those black depths hypnotizing him—just like they had in the war room. Everything around him seemed to fade away. Darkness surrounded him. Sound ceased to exist. He was becoming lost in a gaze as beautiful as the night.

Nikolai blinked, and the spell was broken.

Damien couldn’t believe that had just happened. He’d felt so out of his head that he probably wouldn’t have struggled if the Drágun had tried to escape.

Nikolai’s gaze was still focused on him, but Damien wasn’t about to bend that easily again. Damien grabbed the man by his shirtfront then hauled Nikolai closer until he felt the Drágun’s warm breath brush across his cheek.

“Stop looking at me like that,” Damien growled out. He wasn’t sure if it was even possible to see hurt in the eyes of a Drágun, but Damien could swear he had seen it in Nikolai’s.

Nikolai didn’t fight him, he simply averted his gaze. “My apologies.”

Damien was slightly staggered by the apology, so much so that he hadn’t noticed Nikolai’s hands coming up to cover his own until the cool metal of the shackles touched Damien’s wrists.

Damien jumped back and clutched onto the doorway to steady himself. He watched as Nikolai stood up straighter then took a step back. Damien hadn’t noticed before that the man had him by a couple of inches, and for some reason that irritated him. With his hand on the doorknob—ready to close the door and lock out Nikolai from his view—Damien caught the sounds of footsteps and what sounded like a very angry dragon.

“Hang on, Damien,” Zane directed as he and Bo neared. “Bo has decided that he wants to be with his brother.”

“What?” Nikolai neared the door, but quickly came to a stop when Damien glared at him. “Bo, I told you—”

“I don’t care what you told me.” The little man brushed by Damien as if he wasn’t there practically blocking the entire entryway. “I’m not leaving you.”

“Damn it, brother.” Nikolai turned to Damien. “Tell him he can’t be here.”

“Sorry,” Zane replied, “but Keddrick says he can.”

For a split second, Damien had been curious about the cold glare in Zane’s eyes, but then he remembered everything the asshole was doing to Larken and could care less what troubles Zane might be going through.

“Whenever you want out, Bo, just holler—there’ll be someone down the hall to let you out.” Zane turned to Damien. “Head back to the war room.”

The command was simple, but Damien hated every ordering word that spewed from the man’s mouth. He curled his lip in disdain at Zane’s retreating back.

Go to hell.

After taking one last glance at the pair in the cell, Damien locked them up, placed the key on the hook next to the door then headed upstairs.
